Before sending a proposal
Indie Horizon Press develops works of enduring cultural, historical, literary and public significance. Submission windows are announced by subject and list; unsolicited complete manuscripts are not presently accepted. This allows the editorial team to give commissioned and invited projects the attention they require.

Proposal requirements
- One-page overview and intended readership
- Chapter outline or collection structure
- Author biography and relevant expertise
- Two representative chapters when requested
- Disclosure of prior publication and rights status
- Image, translation and third-party permissions plan
Do not send original documents or irreplaceable material. Receipt of a proposal does not create a publishing agreement, confidentiality obligation or duty to review. No fee is charged merely to consider a proposal.
What happens when a window opens
1 · Triage
Fit with the list, clarity of argument, originality, evidence, readership and rights feasibility.
2 · Editorial assessment
Selected proposals may receive a request for sample material, fuller documentation or revision.
3 · Independent review
Scholarly and policy projects may be referred to qualified readers. Review method depends on the work.
4 · Contract
Only a written agreement signed by authorised parties creates a commitment to publish.
What a complete proposal should establish
A proposal should make the intellectual and practical case for the book without asking an editor to infer its structure, evidence or rights position.
Argument and readership
- The central question, argument or artistic intention
- Primary and secondary readerships
- Comparable works and the proposed book’s distinction
- Projected word count, structure and completion stage
Evidence and production
- Principal archives, texts, interviews or datasets
- Translation, image, map and quotation requirements
- Permissions already secured and permissions outstanding
- Any schedule, funding or institutional dependency
Integrity disclosures
- Prior publication, simultaneous submission and contractual restrictions
- Conflicts of interest and material factual disputes
- Use of research assistants, translators or automated tools
- Potential privacy, cultural-sensitivity or defamation concerns
Special categories
- Translations: source edition, translator status and territorial rights
- Estates: authority to represent the author or work
- Public-domain editions: editorial contribution and source provenance
- Traditional knowledge: community authority and custodial protocol
File handling. When material is requested, send readable, virus-free files in the specified format and retain your own complete copy. Passwords, identity documents and confidential source material should not be sent unless an authorised editor has provided a secure method and explained why the information is required.
Using Indie Horizon Press material
Unless a page states otherwise, the site’s editorial descriptions, design, original essays, cover artwork and publisher materials may not be reproduced beyond uses permitted by law without written permission. Bibliographic facts and short quotations should be properly attributed.
Permission requests should identify
- Exact title, author and ISBN where applicable
- Material requested, including page or image
- New work, format, language and territory
- Print run, price and publication date
- Commercial, educational or accessibility purpose
Third-party material
Indie Horizon Press cannot license material owned by another author, archive, museum, photographer, translator or publisher. The credit line or linked holding institution should be consulted directly.
Corrections, attribution and rights concerns
Rights holders may request correction of bibliographic information, clarification of attribution or review of a link. A request should state the affected page, the asserted right or error, supporting information and the remedy sought. Good-faith notices will be reviewed promptly and without prejudice.
